How Many Muslin Squares Do I Need? An Honest Guide for UK Parents

Muslin square vs muslin swaddle — what’s the difference, and do you actually need both? It’s one of the most common questions new parents ask, and the confusion is completely understandable. They’re made from the same fabric, often sold in the same section of baby shops, and look similar at first glance. But they serve completely different purposes. Here’s what you need to know.

The Key Difference: Size and Purpose

The most important distinction is size:

  • Muslin square: typically 70x70cm — a small, multi-purpose cloth
  • Muslin swaddle: typically 120x120cm or larger — designed specifically for wrapping a baby

This size difference determines everything else. A muslin square is your everyday workhorse — burp cloth, bib, face cloth, light blanket. A muslin swaddle is a sleep tool, sized generously enough to wrap a newborn securely and stay in place through the night.

Muslin Square — What It’s For

A muslin square is the most versatile item in the newborn toolkit. Its 70x70cm size makes it perfect for:

  • Burp cloth — draped over your shoulder after feeds
  • Bib — folded and tucked into the collar
  • Changing mat liner — a softer, washable surface for nappy changes
  • Face cloth — dampened for topping and tailing
  • Light blanket — in warmer months, tucked in firmly at the sides
  • Sun shade — draped over a pram to block direct sunlight
  • Comforter — many babies become attached to a muslin square as a comfort object

Most parents find they need 6-10 muslin squares in constant rotation during the newborn stage.

Muslin Swaddle — What It’s For

A muslin swaddle has one primary job: wrapping your baby securely for sleep. Its large size (120x120cm minimum) gives you enough fabric to:

  • Wrap the arms snugly against the body
  • Fold up the bottom securely around the legs
  • Tuck the remaining fabric behind the back
  • Keep the wrap in place through a full night’s sleep

The breathable muslin weave is what makes it suitable for sleep — it allows airflow and prevents overheating, which is one of the key recommendations from the NHS and The Lullaby Trust for safe newborn sleep.

Can You Use a Muslin Square as a Swaddle?

This is the most important question — and the answer is no, not safely.

A 70x70cm muslin square is simply too small to swaddle effectively. When you wrap a newborn with a square that size, you don’t have enough fabric to tuck and secure properly. The result is a wrap that comes loose during sleep — and loose fabric near a baby’s face is a safety risk.

For safe swaddling, you need a minimum of 120x120cm. This gives you enough fabric to wrap snugly, leave room for the hips to move freely (important for hip development), and tuck securely so the wrap stays in place.

Can You Use a Muslin Swaddle as a Square?

Yes — a large muslin swaddle can do everything a muslin square does, just with more fabric. Many parents use their swaddles as pram blankets, nursing covers, and play mat liners once the swaddling stage is over.

The difference is that a swaddle is overkill for everyday tasks like burping. You wouldn’t use a king-size duvet as a face cloth. Most parents find a combination works best: muslin squares for everyday use, swaddles for sleep.

Do You Need Both?

Yes — if you’re planning to swaddle. They serve different purposes and aren’t interchangeable in the ways that matter most.
