What are muslin squares used for
What are muslin squares used for? If someone has handed you a pile of them and said “you’ll need these,” they’re right — but muslin squares are so versatile that new parents often don’t realise half of what they can do. This guide covers every practical use, so you get the most out of every one.
What Is a Muslin Square?
A muslin square is a small, lightweight square of loosely woven cotton fabric, typically 70x70cm. The open weave makes it breathable, soft, and quick-drying — which is why it’s been a newborn staple for generations.
It’s not the same as a muslin swaddle (which is much larger, typically 120x120cm, and designed specifically for wrapping). A muslin square is a multi-purpose everyday tool that you’ll reach for constantly in the first year.
The Most Common Uses for Muslin Squares
1. Burp Cloth
This is the most common use — and the reason most parents end up needing more than they expected. Drape a muslin square over your shoulder before winding your baby after a feed. The soft cotton absorbs milk and sick quickly, and the square size is perfect for covering your shoulder and back.
Tip: keep several within arm’s reach at all times during the newborn stage. You’ll go through them quickly.
2. Muslin Bib
Fold a muslin square into a triangle and tuck it into your baby’s collar for an impromptu bib. It’s gentler against sensitive newborn skin than many purpose-made bibs, and far more absorbent.
3. Changing Mat Cover
Lay a muslin square over a changing mat to create a softer, more comfortable surface for your baby. It also protects the mat and washes easily — much easier than washing an entire changing mat cover.
4. Comforter and Soothing Aid
Many babies become attached to a muslin square as a comfort object. The soft texture and familiar scent (especially if it carries your scent) can be incredibly soothing. Some parents sleep with a muslin square for a night before giving it to their baby, so it carries their smell.
5. Light Blanket
In warmer months, a muslin square can serve as a light blanket for a sleeping baby in a pram or Moses basket. Always tuck it in firmly at the sides — never leave loose fabric near the face.
6. Sun Shade
Drape a muslin square over a pram to create a lightweight sun shade. The breathable weave allows airflow while blocking direct sunlight — safer than thick covers that can trap heat.
7. Breastfeeding Cover
A muslin square can be used as a discreet nursing cover when breastfeeding in public. It’s lightweight enough not to overheat your baby and soft enough not to irritate.
8. Mopping Up
Spills, dribbles, sick, tears — muslin squares are the most-reached-for cloth in the newborn toolkit. Keep a stack in every room of the house during the early weeks.
9. Face Cloth
The soft cotton is gentle enough to use as a face cloth for topping and tailing — wiping your baby’s face and bottom during a quick clean. Dampen with warm water and the fabric is gentle on sensitive newborn skin.
10. Play Mat Liner
Lay several muslin squares over a play mat to create a softer, washable surface for tummy time. Easy to wash and dry between uses.
How Many Muslin Squares Do You Actually Need?
Most parents find that 6-10 muslin squares is a practical starting point. You’ll go through them quickly in the newborn stage — milk, sick, and general mess means you’ll be washing frequently. Having enough to rotate through without running out is worth the investment.
The good news: muslin squares don’t stop being useful as your baby grows. They transition into face cloths, light blankets, and general household cloths long after the newborn stage is over.
Muslin Square vs Muslin Swaddle — What’s the Difference?
This is the most common source of confusion when buying. A muslin square (70x70cm) and a muslin swaddle (120x120cm+) are made from the same fabric but serve different purposes:
- Muslin square (70x70cm) — everyday multi-purpose use: burp cloth, bib, blanket, face cloth
- Muslin swaddle (120x120cm+) — specifically designed for wrapping a baby for sleep
A muslin square is too small to swaddle safely — the wrap will come loose. If you’re looking for swaddling, you need a large muslin swaddle specifically.
What to Look for When Buying Muslin Squares
- OEKO-TEX certified — fabric tested and free from harmful substances
- 100% cotton — breathable, soft, and gets softer with every wash
- 70x70cm — the standard size for all the uses above
- Properly finished edges — prevents fraying through repeated washing
