How Many Muslin Cloths Do I Need? An Honest Guide for UK Parents
How many muslins do you actually need? It’s one of those questions every expectant parent ends up googling at some point — often after someone hands them a single muslin square and says “you’ll need loads of these.” But how many is loads? This guide gives you an honest answer.
The Short Answer
For most UK parents, the practical answer is:
- 4–6 large muslin swaddles (120x120cm)
- 6–10 muslin squares (70x70cm) for everyday use
The two serve completely different purposes — which is where a lot of confusion comes from.
Muslin Swaddles vs Muslin Squares — What’s the Difference?
This distinction matters more than most people realise when they’re shopping.
Muslin swaddles (120x120cm+) are large enough to wrap a baby securely for sleep. They’re what people mean when they talk about swaddling. A proper swaddle needs enough fabric to wrap, tuck, and stay secure through the night — which requires at least 120x120cm.
Muslin squares (70x70cm) are smaller and serve a different set of purposes: burp cloths, bibs, changing mat liners, light shade from the sun, quick clean-ups. They are not large enough to swaddle safely — the wrap will come loose, which creates a safety risk.
Many parents end up buying muslin squares thinking they can swaddle with them, then find out they can’t. Buy both — they’re not interchangeable.
How Many Muslin Swaddles Do You Need?
4–6 is the practical minimum. Here’s the logic:
- Newborns feed frequently, bring up milk often, and have unpredictable nappy situations. A swaddle can go from clean to unusable quickly.
- You’ll want at least one on the baby, one clean and ready, and one in the wash at any given time.
- Washing and drying takes time — having fewer than 4 means you’ll frequently run out.
Most parents find that 4–6 swaddles gets them through the newborn stage comfortably. If you’re doing laundry daily, 4 is workable. If you prefer washing every other day, 6 gives you more breathing room.
How Many Muslin Squares Do You Need?
6–10 is a reasonable starting point. Muslin squares are the most versatile item in the newborn toolkit — they get used for everything and go through the wash constantly.
Many parents end up with more over time as gifts arrive, which is fine. They don’t take up much space and continue to be useful long past the newborn stage.
Do You Need Both?
Yes — they do different jobs. The swaddle is a sleep tool. The square is an everyday utility item. Trying to use squares for swaddling (too small) or swaddles as burp cloths (overkill) doesn’t work well in practice.
What to Look for When Buying
Not all muslins are the same. For swaddles especially, quality matters:
- OEKO-TEX certified — every thread and dye independently tested and free from harmful substances
- 120x120cm minimum size — anything smaller is a muslin square, not a swaddle
- 100% cotton or cotton-bamboo — avoid polyester content
- 60–80 GSM — light enough to breathe, structured enough to wrap
When Do You Stop Needing Swaddles?
Most babies transition out of swaddling between 2 and 4 months, when they begin showing signs of rolling. At that point, the swaddle doesn’t become useless — it just changes role.
A large muslin swaddle makes an excellent pram blanket, a light cot layer, a car seat cover, and a nursing cover well into the first year and beyond. Most parents find they’re still reaching for their muslins long after the swaddling stage is over.
